Jules Verne-Twenty thousand miles under the sea The plot of the novel begins in 1866, when there was a mention in the English papers of some kind of sea monster of enormous dimensions that attacks ships. Scientists have also studied this phenomenon. Some said it was a submarine, and others said it was an as yet unknown creature. Finally, the Americans sent the frigate Abraham Lincoln to the sea, which had the task of clarifying the mystery. The French naturalist Professor Aronnax and his servant Conseil also took part in the expedition, who met the harpooner Ned Land on the ship. The expedition was unsuccessful for a long time, until one evening the crew saw a glow of light coming from a short distance from the ship. The frigate attempted to pursue and harpoon the creature. Suddenly, however, the monster turned and sailed at tremendous speed towards the ship, with which it immediately collided. Professor Arronax, his servant Conseil and the harpooner Ned Land fell into the open sea. They saved themselves on the back of the monster, which they soon discovered was not really a fish, but a submarine. Four men climbed out of it, dragged them inside and imprisoned them in a dark chamber. The next day they were visited there by a man who introduced himself as Captain Nemo and informed them that they were in the Nautilus submarine, which they must never leave in order not to reveal its secret. As involuntary passengers, they experienced incredible events during the submarine voyage, got to know the unsuspected beauties of the seabed and learned about the natural peculiarities of the oceans. They discovered the remains of ancient Atlantis near the shores of Morocco. Professor Aronnax saw the remains of an aqueduct, several temples, and also the remains of a pier. The destruction of the Atlantean civilization was apparently caused by an undersea volcano, which is still active. Due to its influence, the mutation of sea animals also occurred here, because Captain Nemo's expedition met numerous sea monsters here. They sailed through the so-called Arabian Tunnel, i.e. the underwater tunnel under the Isthmus of Suez, which connects the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. The tunnel was discovered by Captain Nemo because he noticed that the same animals live in both seas and from this he concluded that the two seas must be connected. They walked around the seabed in a space suit invented by Captain Nemo (the steel air tank that the suit was equipped with held enough air for a ten-hour stay underwater). They almost died of suffocation under the South Pole when the submarine was trapped in the mass of ice, unable to surface and renew its supply of fresh air. Despite these experiences, especially the harpooner Ned Land did not accept the fact that he should spend the rest of his life in a submarine. The right moment to escape came not far from the Norwegian shores. Ned talked the professor into escaping as well, who was very angry with Nemo because Nemo had sunk a warship of "Earth tyrants" (i.e. the colonial powers that Captain Nemo had declared war on) shortly before. All three captives escaped from the submarine in a boat and were rescued by local fishermen.
