To know who Joel was in the Bible, we need to consider that, although the Prophet Joel is the best known character with that name, other men with the name Joel are also mentioned. Joel was a very popular name among the Hebrews, which explains the number of biblical characters who had this name. The name Joel means “Jehovah is God.” In this Bible study, we will learn about all the characters in the Bible with the name Joel, in addition to the Prophet Joel, of course. As we have already said, there are other characters named Joel in the Bible. In fact, at least fourteen men are referred to by this name in biblical texts. Several of them are mentioned very briefly, but it is enough for their names to be recorded. Below, we will learn about these men: 1) Joel, the eldest son of Samuel (1 Sam. 8:2) and father of Heman, the singer described in 1 Chronicles (6:33; 15:17). In some versions, his name may appear as “Vashni.” Joel and his younger brother, Abijah, were appointed by Samuel to be judges in Beersheba. However, their failure in the role contributed to the elders’ demand for a king for Israel. 2) An ancestor of Samuel mentioned in the same chapter 6 of the book of 1 Chronicles (6:36). He was the son of Azariah and father of Elkanah. 3) Joel, a prince of the Simeonites mentioned in 1 Chronicles 4:35 and who lived about 715 BC. 4) A member of the tribe of Reuben mentioned in 1 Chronicles 5:4-8. 5) A chief in Bashan mentioned in 1 Chronicles 5:12. This character is sometimes considered by some scholars to be the same Joel mentioned above. 6) Joel, son of Izrahiah and chief in Issachar in the time of David (1 Chr 7:3). 7) Joel, brother of Nathan, also called Igal (2 Sam 23:36), one of David's mighty men (1 Chr 11:38). 8) A Gershonite, son of Ladan and chief of the Levites (1 Chr 23:8). He was appointed by David to assist in the return of the Ark of the Covenant from the house of Oded-Edom (1 Chr. 17:7, 11). He was also appointed keeper of the Temple treasury (1 Chr. 26:22). Some interpreters consider these to be two different men with the same name. 9) A man appointed by David as the chief leader to govern the half-tribe of Manasseh (1 Chr. 27:20). He was the son of Pedaiah. 10) A Levite who assisted Hezekiah in restoring the Temple services (2 Chr. 29:12). 11) The son of Nebo who was numbered among the men who promised to drive out the pagan wives (Ezra 10:43). 12) Joel, overseer of the Benjamites in post-exilic Jerusalem (Neh. 11:9). 13) The son of Bani, also called Uel in Ezra 10:34. Another man listed among those who would expel pagan wives. Now that we have known all the characters in the Bible who had the name “Joel”, we are left with the prophet Joel. In fact, little is known about him, since there is no reference made to him in other books of the Old Testament other than in the book that bears his name. The little we know about the biography of the prophet Joel is exclusively indicated by his writings. Based on them, we know that the prophet Joel was the son of Pethuel and lived in Judah, most likely in Jerusalem. The exact time in which the prophet Joel lived is not known, simply because the date of his book also remains uncertain. Some scholars suggest something around 830 B.C. It is also true that some interpreters do not consider him to be a historical figure, that is, according to them, the name Joel does not refer to a real person and only indicates the theme of the prophecy of the book especially highlighted in Joel 2:26,27. Obviously this position makes no sense, since the book of Joel makes the historical profile of the character very clear, citing the name of his father and giving clues about the region to which he belonged. Furthermore, in the New Testament the apostle Peter makes a reference to Joel's prophecy, clearly placing the prophet Joel as a historical figure (Acts 2:16,17).
