Quotes and excerpts from the book “A Wholly Different Way of Living” by Jiddu Krishnamurti. Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895 - 1986) was an Indian philosopher, writer, orator and educator. Krishnamurti delivered discourses that covered topics such as psychological revolution, meditation, knowledge, freedom, human relationships, the nature of the mind, the origin of thought and the bringing about of positive changes in global society. He constantly stressed the need for a revolution in the psyche of every human being and emphasized that such a revolution could not be brought about by any external entity, be it religious, political or social. A revolution that could only occur through self-knowledge; as well as the correct practice of meditation, and man freed from any and all forms of psychological authority. ???? If you observe closely, you will see that it is thought, and nothing else, that gives us the notion of continuity. Through thought you identify yourself with your family, your home, your paintings or poems, with your character, your frustrations, your joys. The more you think about a given problem, the more you strengthen the root and the continuity of that problem. If you like someone, you think of him, and that very thought gives the feeling of continuity in time. Of course you must think; but can you think for a moment and then drop the thought? If you did not say, 'I like this, it is my thing - it is my picture, an expression of my personality, my God, my wife, my virtue - and I want to keep it' - if you did not say that, you would have no feeling of continuity in time. But you never think of each problem clearly and completely. There is always the pleasure you want to keep, and the pain you want to get rid of, which means you think of both; and so thought gives continuity to both. What we call 'thought' is the reaction of memory, of association - essentially the same thing as the 'reaction' of a computer; and you have come to the point where you yourself see the truth of that. What is the real function of thought? And we find that all our thinking is the reaction, the 'response' of memory. The whole structure of our consciousness, of our thought, is the residue, the reservoir of our reactions. Thought, of course, can never produce freedom, because freedom does not come from reaction. Freedom is not the rejection of things that cause us pain, nor the turning away from things that give us pleasure and to which we have become slaves.” Jiddu Krishnamurti. “We are generally interested in our own security. We need companionship and hope to find happiness in a given relationship; we want to be famous, to create, to express ourselves, to expand, to fulfil ourselves; we want power, position, prestige. To a greater or lesser degree, these are, in fact, what most of us are interested in; and freedom, God, truth, love, become something to be sought after. Thus, as I have said, our religion is a superficial thing, a kind of entertainment of little importance in our lives. We are satisfied with trivialities, and for this reason there is not the alertness, the awareness necessary to understand this complex process which is called living.” Jiddu Krishnamurti. “What brings peace, true tranquility and serenity of mind, is the understanding of the total process of ourselves, and that does not mean seeking peace, but understanding the 'I'.” Jiddu Krishnamurti.
