Oviedo School of Philosophy Jesús G. Maestro Cervantes' Exemplary Novels Interpreted from the Perspective of Philosophical Materialism March 28, 2016 https://fgbueno.es/act/efo113.htm Over the last few decades, the system of thought constructed by Gustavo Bueno, called Philosophical Materialism, has experienced a strong development and a powerful influence beyond philosophy, since it has revolutionized the methods of knowledge of other sciences and specialized knowledge, including those related to literature. In fact, Bueno's Theory of Literature based on Philosophical Materialism allows for an extremely original renewal of the current state of literary studies, mired in the dead end of sterile relativism and an increasingly degrading postmodernism. In relation to Cervantes' literary work, Philosophical Materialism allows for a critical and dialectical approach to his work. An exhibition of the Novelas ejemplares will be offered here, a collection of 12 stories that formed part of Benito Espinosa's personal library, intended to combat the false and unfounded image of an idealistic, playful Cervantes, compatible with all religions. Quite the contrary: Cervantes is an author who demands to be interpreted from a materialistic (not idealistic) rationalism and whose work opts for Christianity over Islam and for Catholicism over Protestantism. Cervantes is an atheist philosopher, of Catholic training and convictions, in whose literary work all idealisms are crushed and parodied, which are portrayed and ridiculed as social pathologies.
