Jesus and the Dead Sea Scrolls - Do the Gospels Need to Be Rewritten? - Dr. Guido Baltes The sensational discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in the middle of the 20th century has given rise to a wide range of hypotheses and conspiracy theories. Some have assumed that they can now finally reveal secret, hidden facts about Jesus that the Christian church has allegedly kept under wraps for centuries. Books such as "Classified Jesus" or "The Da Vinci Code" have brought these assumptions to the attention of the general public. In this lecture, Dr. Guido Baltes (Marburg) therefore examines the question of whether the history of Jesus needs to be rewritten in light of the Dead Sea Scrolls. He tells the exciting story of the discovery of the scrolls and their publication. As a long-time expert on the Holy Land and early Jewish writings, and in particular the New Testament, Guido Baltes clears up many popular misunderstandings and popular but essentially unscientific misinformation. The writings of Qumran shed light on the contemporary context into which Jesus was born and in which he worked, but - simply because they date from the time before Jesus for the most part - they offer no basis for rewriting the story of Jesus. They provide an important Jewish background for the New Testament, but do not contradict it in any way. Instead, they strengthen our trust in the reliability of the New Testament writings, precisely because they provide a clear, unobstructed view of Jewish religious ideas of the time. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ believethinking is an initiative by...
