We had an unmissable conversation with Jessé Souza, author of, among many other books, “The Poor on the Right – The Vanguard of Bastards”. The book’s cover contains an eloquent question, which promises an answer: “What explains the adhesion of the resentful to the extreme right?” This was the guiding thread of our conversation with Jessé. And we had to dig into the roots of exclusion in Brazil. The problem lies not only in the spiteful way in which the elite views “the bastards”, but also in the generous eyes with which they view themselves. Given this poor right-winger who is now leaving his mark on Brazilian politics — and in the elections —, an old question resonates: “What should be done?” The conversation pursues this answer. It remains to be seen.
