According to a narration, during the Battle of Uhud, when the battle was heated and the armor he was wearing was too tight, the Prophet (pbuh) opened his hands and prayed to Allah. Thereupon, Gabriel (pbuh) came and said, “O Messenger of Allah, your Lord sends you greetings and asks you to take off your armor and recite this prayer. This prayer will provide you and your ummah with a greater security than armor.” It is attributed to the Prophet (pbuh) through Musa al-Kazim, Ja’far al-Sadiq, Muhammad al-Baqir, Zayn al-Abidin, Hz. Hussein (ra) and Hz. Ali (ra). Many things are told about its virtues and benefits in Shia sources. Jawshan al-Kabir was especially popular in the Shia world. In addition to its transmission through the Ahl al-Bayt, the news about its virtues also had a great impact on this. Among the Sunni Muslims, the first person to narrate Jawshan al-Kabir was Ahmed Ziyaeddin Gumushanevi in ​​his book Mecmuatu'l-Ahzab, the book of the vird of his order. The widespread recognition of Jawshan al-Kabir in Turkey began with Ustad Bediuzzaman. Ustad said—in his own words—that he had received lessons on this prayer from Imam Rabbani (ra) and Zeynelâbidin (ra) and that Jawshan al-Kabir was a true and complete supplication of the Qur'an and a kind of summary of the Qur'an. In addition, Master Bediuzzaman also says that this prayer, which was filtered from the Quran and came to the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) through revelation, is unique and its description is incomparable. He calls the Treatise of Invocation, which he calls the Third Ray, “a lesson I learned from Jawshan al-Kabir.” And in this work, he states that this prayer is unique and incomparable in describing the description and attributes of Allah (swt). He also states that the Risale-i Nur emerged by receiving inspiration from both the Quran and, in a way, Jawshan al-Kabir. Master Bediuzzaman wrote a letter to one of his students who had doubts about the Jawshan al-Kabir prayer, giving a lesson on the virtues of this prayer and its attribution to the Prophet (pbuh), and also eliminating many doubts that exist today. Master Bediuzzaman, who used to recite this prayer once or sometimes three times in its entirety at the beginning of each day, recommended that his students recite it as well, and he himself said that it relieved their troubles by reciting it in times of trouble, distress and calamity.
