NewsJardinTV, the channel passionate about plants, gardens, botany, nature and gardening, is happy to welcome you to the garden of Nicole and Patrick Mioulane, for issue 243 of its daily show: "Le Quotidien du Jardin". Our subscriber AliciaB3 asks us the following question: I saw beautiful white and pink flowers in a garden whose owner told me that they were anemones, but these plants do not look at all like the anemones that I often buy at the florist, why? The plant that Alicia mentions is the Japanese anemone, which flowers in late summer. The one she commonly buys at the florist is the Caen anemone (Anemone coronaria). The genus Anemone (Linnaeus 1753) includes about 120 species of perennial plants belonging to the Ranunculaceae family. Japanese anemones are rhizomatous herbaceous perennials. They form clumps of 30 cm to more than 1 m, with trifoliate leaves. The inflorescence is a cyme with 2 or 3 branches, each flower with 5 tepals (sepals that look like petals, not true petals) measuring about 5 cm in diameter. Many cultivars have double flowers with about 20 sepals. Among the cultivars to recommend, here are a dozen proposed in alphabetical order: • 'Bressingham Glow': double or semi-double flower, deep pink in a flat or upside-down cup, yellow heart; compact: 60 cm, flowering for more than 50 days from the end of August to the beginning of September • 'Crispa': also called 'Lady Gilmour', this cultivar surprises with its curly foliage edged in red, semi-double pink flower, Height 60 cm, flowers for 45 days • 'Fantasy Pocahontas': semi-double flower, light pink, slightly curly petals, compact plant Height 40 to 50 cm, flowering for 50 days • 'Honorine Jobert': variety discovered in Verdun by Monsieur Jobert in his garden in 1858 and which he dedicated to his daughter Honorine. Very vigorous plant (1.50 m), flowers until November for 45 days, in large single cups with 5/9 pure white tepals. • 'Königin Charlotte' or 'Queen Charlotte' is a German creation from 1898 (W.Pfitzer), large semi-double pale pink flower in a flared cup, Height: 1.10 to 1.50 m, fairly brief flowering (less than a month) • 'Pamina': double or semi-double flower, in a very loose flared cup with narrow tepals, deep candy pink; height: 1 m, flowering 45 days • 'Praecox': German creation from 1935, single flowers, nail-shaped tepals with irregular and wavy margin, bright candy pink with dark purple highlights; compact plant (50 to 70 cm), flowers for more than 50 days. • 'Pretty Lady Susan': single flower, bright dark pink, Height 50 cm, flowers more than 50 days • 'Prinz Heinrich' or 'Prince Henry': compact plant 60 to 80 cm, double or semi-double flower, dark purplish pink, flared cup flowers, narrow tepals that can be straightened, wide and dense golden yellow crown composed of protruding stamens; flowering 2 months, German variety from 1902 • 'September Charm': vigorous plant (1.20 to 1.60 m), single flower in a flat cup in a gradient from mauve pink to magenta pink, reverse side clearly darker, even purple, lasting 45 days between September and October • 'Whirlwind': semi-double, white flower, 80 cm, flowering 40 days • 'Wild Swan': single flower, white shaded with mauve, Height 50 cm, Very early variety (from June) continues for more than two months Autumn-flowering anemones thrive in light or partial shade, but tolerate full sun as long as there is sufficient moisture. These plants appreciate fresh but drained soil, rich in humus, and especially not calcareous. Japanese anemones dread soggy soil in winter, but once established in favorable soil, they can be invasive. Be careful, like many Ranunculaceae (there is aconite in this family), Japanese anemones are toxic plants. Thank you for following this daily program. We hope you enjoyed our video. Our team wishes you a pleasant time and will see you tomorrow evening for a new issue of our program "LE QUOTIDIEN DU JARDIN". It's on NewsJardinTV and nowhere else! In the next program, Patrick will answer this question: What varieties of Abelia can you recommend to me?
