In December, Tokyo announced a doubling of its defense budget by 2027, something never seen since World War II. Like Germany, the archipelago is in the midst of revising its military doctrine. Since the war in Ukraine and following heightened tensions in the Taiwan Strait, Tokyo has been strengthening its military force and rearming in the face of multiple threats. In the jungles of Nagasaki, our team was able to follow the training of the commandos of the Self-Defense Forces - the equivalent of the Japanese army - who are preparing their country for a possible conflict with Beijing, Tokyo's great fear. Although the country officially shows itself to be committed to the constitutional pacifism applied since 1947, the remilitarization of Japan is taking place at a rapid pace. One hundred and ten kilometers from Taiwan, in the Okinawa archipelago, on the peaceful island of Yonaguni, known for its lofty cliffs and wild horses, the inhabitants fear being drawn into a conflict between the two world superpowers, China and the United States... The fishermen of Yonaguni denounce both the harassment of the Chinese coast guard, but also the missiles from Beijing, which fell into Japanese waters in August 2022, during Chinese military exercises around Taiwan... If Japan, Washington's main ally, is appreciated in the West, it is no less surrounded by hostile neighboring countries, including three nuclear powers: China, North Korea, Russia... It is this other Japan, isolated, worried and still traumatized by the ghosts of the Second World War, that this report depicts. Subscribe to the ARTE channel / @arte Follow us on the networks!
