This galaxy has an elaborate mass to our Milky Way at a similar stage of development. Unlike other galaxies from this time, which are significantly more massive, Firefly Sparkle is made up of 10 star clusters, each with specific characteristics, and is going through several phases of star formation. The image of the galaxy was made possible by a so-called gravitational lens, where a cluster of galaxies in the foreground enhances the appearance of the distant galaxy. The combination of this effect with Webb's ability to image high-resolution infrared light probed new data about the galaxy's contents. The researchers modeled what the galaxy might look like without damage from gravitational lensing, revealing a raindrop-like shape. Webb's data indicates that the Firefly Sparkle is a low-mass galaxy that still has billions of years to fully develop. The different star clusters offered are in various stages of formation, and the projected shape of the galaxy suggests that its stars have not yet organized themselves into a central bulge or flattened disk, reinforcing the idea that the galaxy is still forming. The researchers also identified two nearby companion galaxies that may influence the formation of the Firefly Sparkle over billions of years. As these galaxies interact, the gas condenses and forms new stars, contributing to the growth of their masses. This discovery is just the beginning of what the telescope can reveal about early galaxies, and scientists are eager to analyze more data to better understand how these galaxies were formed.
