Jalal ad-Din Manguberdi led the struggle of Khorezm against the Mongol invasion. Having gathered 300 loyal warriors, Jalal ad-Din went to Khorasan. In the district of Nisa, the Khorezmians attacked a Mongol detachment (Uzbek)Russian, consisting of 700 people, and defeated it. Genghis Khan was forced to send a special detachment to Khorezm and Khorasan, which encountered the army of the younger sons of Ala ad-Din Muhammad. In a fierce battle, both of Jalal ad-Din's brothers died. Jalal ad-Din himself was advancing towards Ghazni at this time. In the upper reaches of the Murghab, he was joined by the former governor of Merv, Khan-Malik, and the Turkmen Khan Seif ad-Din. Arriving in Ghazni, Jalal ad-Din soon gathered an army of ten thousand, attacked with it the Mongol detachment besieging Kandahar, and routed it. The commanders of the defeated Khorezmian troops, having heard about the successes of their ruler, began to gather in Ghazni, and soon there were about 70 thousand warriors under the command of Jalal ad-Din. His cousin Amin al-Mulk, the commander Timur-Malik, the Khan of the Karluks Azam-Malik and the leader of the Afghans Muzaffar-Malik arrived under his banner. Genghis Khan, not yet knowing about the forces of the Khorezmshah, sent a 30-thousand army against him under the command of Shigi-Kutuku. The main source about the life of Jalal ad-Din is the work of an-Nasawi "Sirat as-sultan Jalal-ad-Din Manguberdi" ("Biography of Sultan Jalal-ad-Din Mankburni"). Battle of Parwan In the spring, Jalal ad-Din's advancing army encountered Shigi-Kutuku's advance detachment near the village of Valian on the Gori River. The Mongol detachment was almost completely destroyed: only a hundred warriors survived. Then Jalal ad-Din headed for the gorge, where he began to wait for the battle. Shigi-Kutuku moved his entire army to this place. Both armies met in a rocky gorge, squeezed by steep cliffs. The terrain was unfavorable for cavalry, and both sides were forced to refrain from maneuvering. Jalal ad-Din ordered Temurmalik to move forward with foot archers. Shigi-Kutuku held out for the first day, despite the fact that the Khorezmians, having discovered the enemy's weak point, climbed the cliffs and began shooting at the Mongols from above, which caused serious damage to the Mongol army. The next morning, Jalal ad-Din's warriors looked over the gorge and saw that the Mongol army had become more numerous. In fact, Shigi-Kutuku had ordered that straw dummies wrapped in rags be mounted on the spare horses. The Khorezmshah calmed his commanders and ordered the entire front line of his army to dismount. The Mongol attack on the enemy's left wing was met with a hail of arrows. Then Shigi-Kutuku ordered an attack on the enemy along the entire front. However, the hail of arrows and the rocky terrain prevented the Mongols from exploiting their success. Jalal ad-Din mounted his warriors and began a counterattack. Taken by surprise, the Mongols fled. The Khorezmshah's warriors fell upon the retreating enemy, and Shigi-Kutuku lost half of his army. Many researchers note that the defeat of the Mongolian troops at Parvan was the only major defeat of the Mongols during their entire military operations in Central Asia, Iran and Afghanistan during Genghis Khan's campaign to the West. In Uzbekistan, Jalal ad-Din Manguberdi is considered one of the national heroes. In 1999, the 800th anniversary of Jalal ad-Din Manguberdi was widely celebrated. Several monuments have been erected to him in Uzbekistan, and a memorial complex dedicated to Jalal ad-Din Manguberdi has been built in the Khorezm region. In 1999, a commemorative coin of 25 soums dedicated to the 800th anniversary of Jalal ad-Din was issued. On August 30, 2000, the Order of Jaloliddin Manguberdi (Uzbek: Jaloliddin Manguberdi) was established. According to the order's statute, it is awarded to military personnel of the command staff who have demonstrated military talent, an example of courage and heroism in defending the country's independence, the inviolability of its borders, and who have made a great contribution to strengthening the state's defense capability. On August 22, 2003, this order was awarded to the Khorezm region.
