The Jakiunde 2024 calendar presents academics who have achieved excellence in their disciplines after a long professional career, as well as younger colleagues who are doing cutting-edge work in their profession. The protagonist of November is the linguist Ibon Sarasola. In this video recorded by Marina Palacio for the calendar, he explains how the study of Basque became his profession, expressing his opinion on the future of Basque. Ibon Sarasola Errazkin (Donostia, 1946). Graduated in Industrial Engineering (Bilbao Industrial Engineering School, 1970) and graduated in Philosophy and Letters (University of Barcelona, 1975), he completed his doctorate in Philosophy and Letters with a thesis on the Basque lexicographic corpus supervised by Koldo Mitxelena. After teaching for two years at the University of Barcelona, he collaborated with Koldo Mitxelena at the University of Salamanca (1978-79). He was a lecturer at the Faculty of Arts of the University of the Basque Country (1979-1984) and held the Chair of Basque Language at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1987-1998). Since then, he has been Professor of Basque Philology at the Faculty of Arts of the UPV/EHU and Head of the Basque Institute. In 1975, he began working on the lexicography promoted by the Provincial Savings Bank of Gipuzkoa, and his work in the field of Basque dictionaries since then is noteworthy, including: Euskal hiztegi araumaleaea (Euskal hiztegi araumailea) (1977-1979), Gaurko euskara iztikaren freqencio-dzitegi (1982), Hauta-lanerako euskal hiztegi (1984-1995), Euskal hiztegi (1996) and Zehazki (2005). Euskaltzaindia named him a euskaltzain urgazle in 1966 and a euskaltzain oso in 1988. Since Koldo Mitxelena's death, he has been the director of the Orotariko Euskal Hiztegia (OEH) (1987-2005) and the subsequent Euskaltzaindiaren Hiztegia (2012) projects. He began his teaching activity at the University of Barcelona and later worked with Koldo Mitxelena at the University of Salamanca (1978-79). He was a professor at the Faculty of Letters of the Basque Country (1979-1984). He held the Basque Language Chair at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1987-1998). Later he was a professor at the Faculty of Basque Philology at the EHU/UPV, as well as responsible for the Institute of Basque. In 1975 he started working on the lexicographic project promoted by the Provincial Savings Bank of Guipúzcoa and since then he has highlighted his lexicographical work with the creation, among others, of the following works: The Basque Ruler (1977-79), The Frequency Dictionary of Today's Written Basque (1982), The Basque Dictionary for the Selection Work (1984-1995), The Basque Dictionary (1996) and The Specific Dictionary (2005). Corresponding academic number of Euskaltzaindia in 1966 and academic number in 1988; after the death of Koldo Mitxelena, he was named director of the Universal Basque Dictionary (OEH) project (1987-2005) and later directed the dictionary Euskaltzaindiaren Hiztegia (2012). Ibon Sarasola has received the following awards among others: Premio Lizardi for poetry granted by Euskaltzaindia (1966); Premio Mikel Zarate for essay (1971), extraordinary prize for the degree of the University of Barcelona (1975); honor of the Colleges of Industrial Engineers of Araba, Gipuzkoa and Navarra (Donostia 1989); Civic Merit Medal of the Donostia City Council (1996) and the Euskadi Research Award (2011).
