Dimitri Nikolaevich Rudin represents the type of superfluous hero: he is a very learned man, an exceptional orator with a strong personality. He has a strong influence on the young people around him, but he cannot apply the theoretical knowledge he possesses. One of the "victims" of his charm is Daria Mihailovna's daughter, Natalia Alexeevna. She is an ugly young woman, whom her mother considers stupid (although she is not), being quiet, but always attentive and very sensitive. She falls in love with Dimitri Nikolaevich, and he lets her know that he loves her too. The two are released by Pandalevski, a friend of the house, and Rudin is faced with the fait accompli: either he runs away with Natalia Alexeevna and takes her as his wife, or he leaves Daria Mihailovna's house. This is where his true character emerges. He tells Natalia that he cannot run away with her, that he cannot urge her to break her family ties, acting in complete opposition to his liberal leanings. Natalia is disappointed, not understanding how she could get carried away. We meet Rudin again after ten years, in an inn where, talking to Lezhnev, we learn that he has remained the same, stuck in an adolescent impulse without finality, flying from house to house, not having a place of his own. The epilogue reveals that he died during the French Revolution, alone and anonymous.
