Kotlyarevsky Ivan Petrovych (September 9, 1769 - November 10, 1838) was a Ukrainian writer, poet, playwright, founder of modern Ukrainian literature, and public figure. He maintained ties with the Decembrists. His poem "Aeneid" (1798) became the first work in Ukrainian literature written in the vernacular. Kotlyarevsky made the most significant contribution to the formation of the modern Ukrainian literary language. In the conditions of the decline of all varieties of the Old Ukrainian written language, his poem "Aeneid", the plays "Natalka Poltavka" and "Moskal-charivnyk", written on the basis of the living oral speech of the people, initiated a new stage in the formation of the literary language.
