In 1944, he volunteered to join the Brazilian Expeditionary Force, joining the then 1st Company of the 11th Infantry Regiment (11th RI), in São João Del-Rei (MG). Max landed in Italy in September 1944 as a FEB sergeant and led more than 30 patrols in battle areas. In early 1945, Max Wolff would meet his destiny on the battlefields of Italy, definitively writing his name in Brazilian military history, still today in the Second World War. He stood out for his bravery throughout the war, becoming known for his fearlessness, intrepidity and selflessness. His exploits were proclaimed by the combat parties and by several war correspondents from the national and foreign press. In the conquest of Montese, he was an outstanding combatant. Always at the head of his group, he annihilated several enemy positions, contributing significantly to what was one of the most important and dramatic victories of the FEB. He also participated in all of his Battalion's actions in the attack on Monte Castelo on December 12, 1944.
