Sorting through the old papers of a deceased great-uncle, Francis Wayland Thurston stumbles upon a monstrous bas-relief born from the nightmares and visions of an unknown artist and some documents that tell of an infernal cult observed in the Louisiana swamps. Following these tracks and those of the Norwegian sailor Gustaf Johansen, shipwrecked on a ghost island that appeared out of nowhere, Thurston thus learns of Cthulhu, a gigantic, tentacled and shapeless creature that has inhabited the bottom of the sea abyss since time immemorial and whose discovery will risk proving fatal.
