We visited São José das Três Ilhas, which is located in the southern region of the municipality of Belmiro Braga, near the border of the State of Rio de Janeiro. The first resident of the region was Antônio Bernadino de Barros, who acquired two land grants from the chief custodian João Francisco de Souza through Col. Manoel do Vale Amado. The chapel dedicated to Saint Joseph was erected by decree of August 28, 1828, on land donated by one of José Maria Moura's daughters to the Brotherhood of Saint Joseph. The village that emerged near the chapel was consolidated due to the planting of coffee. In 1927, the village was given the toponym São José das Três Ilhas, and in 1938, it officially became Três Ilhas. In the 1950s, Três Ilhas had twenty-six buildings, twenty for residential use and the remaining six for various purposes. The São José Parish Church, located on the slope of a hill, is an expression of the power of the region's coffee barons. The first subscriptions for the construction of the current church were made on September 30, 1877, with contributions from several local farmers, including the barons of São José Del Rei, Santa Justa and Santa Fé. Construction of the building, designed by Quintiliano Nery Ribeiro, began in 1880. On May 9, 1886, the first mass was celebrated in the temple, while it was still under construction. The main chapel was only completed in 1888. The urban layout of São José das Três Ilhas remained unchanged, characterized by a narrow and winding main street. The perimeter of the heritage site also includes the Church of São José and the mansion of the Baron of São José Del Rey.
