Seventy-five years after its founding, the State of Israel is experiencing a serious internal crisis. The chronic conflict with the Palestinians is compounded by a social division unparalleled in the history of the young state. Two millennia after the expulsion and destruction of the Second Temple and a few years after the Holocaust, Jews from all over the world saw their dream of a state of their own come true. On May 14, 1948, Ben Gurion read the Declaration of Independence of Israel in a small house in the center of Tel Aviv. Seventy-five years later, Israel is facing a turbulent and contrasting period. On the one hand, poverty, hardship, and the ongoing conflict with the Palestinians; and on the other, economic growth, social progress, and political and military dominance in the region. At the same time, the state is experiencing its worst internal crisis since its founding. The country is deeply divided in the social, political, and religious spheres. One of the reasons is the judicial reform of a government formed by religious and nationalist parties and led by Benjamin Netanyahu. The government is seeking to limit the power of the Supreme Court. Critics see this as a weakening of the independence of the judiciary and of democracy. Hundreds of thousands of people have been protesting against the government's plan for months.
