Somewhere between England and Ireland lies a large green patch with the promising name "Isle of Men" in the middle of the Irish Sea. The autonomous island with special political status has its own parliament, its own banknotes and its own laws. And its very own motorcycle race - the meeting place for crazy bikers. They love the "Isle of Man" because firstly they can race through the winding village streets at 300 km/h - something that would reasonably be forbidden elsewhere in the world - and secondly because it gives them a suitable place to show how much of a man they are. Over the years, the islanders have come to think that this is completely normal. They just don't like to officially count the deaths at the "Isle of Man TT". That's why a news blackout is immediately imposed when there are accidents. Udo Maurer and Thomas Schaefer were there when man and machine battled the road. The race on the "Isle of Man" - speed as a parlor game. ► A SPIEGEL TV film from August 8th, 1995.
