One of the greatest masters of Turkish Theatre, Nejat Uygur was born on August 10, 1927 in Kilis. He went to primary school in Siirt, Ezine and İntepe. He started theatre in 1938 when he was a primary school student. He completed secondary school in Sarıyer, Çanakkale and Manisa. He entered the Sculpture Department of the Fine Arts Academy. However, he could not graduate. He was discovered by İsmail Dümbüllü. He founded the Nejat Uygur Theatre in 1949. He did theatre both amateurly and professionally for over 60 years. He has over 50 awards. He went on tour to the USA twice and to Europe 4 times. He went on tour to Anatolia for nearly 35 years. He was given the title of 'State Artist' by the Ministry of Culture in 1998. He married Necla Uygur in 1950. They had five children. Of his children, Süheyl and Behzat Uygur are theatre artists like their father. He suffered partial paralysis on September 10, 2007. He passed away in Istanbul on November 18, 2013.
