As part of the fragrance year in the Botanical Garden (2023), we invite you to a lecture by Igor Siedlecki "Is that the only way you smell, or are you saying something to me?" - about scents in the world of ants 🐜🐜🐜 The lecture took place on May 18, 2023. Some people believe that in order to communicate - you have to speak. But is it possible to talk without making any sounds? Communication using gestures seems natural to us. But can you talk with smell? 🐜 We cordially invite you to a lecture during which we will take a closer look at ants and the scents they emit. During the lecture, we will learn how ants talk to each other, what they say and how much they are able to say. 🐜 We will also learn about the extremely important role of smells in distinguishing between these social insects. 🐜 What do you think, can you become an ant when you don't look like an ant at all? 🐜 Finally, we will consider whether we are able to fully understand this specific language of theirs. LEADERS Igor Siedlecki – PhD student at the University of Warsaw Botanical Garden – “The development and increasing availability of research techniques, including molecular techniques, allows us to see and understand interactions that have so far remained beyond the reach of researchers. What is fascinating to me is that the world of interactions is turning out to be increasingly complex, multi-layered and often internally dependent on each other. My greatest scientific dream is to discover the previously unknown mutualistic relationship between ants and fungi.” ––––– Season 2023 AROMATIC BOTANICAL – a year of scents in the Botanical Garden. Following the example of previous years, we have prepared several lectures for you – this time we encouraged you to experience the Garden using smell. Let's close our eyes for a moment and talk in the language of scents. Apart from appearance, one of the most important ways for plants to communicate with their surroundings is scent. Interaction with pollinators, deterring herbivores or attracting mycorrhizal fungi – these are just some examples of how plants communicate with their environment through scent.
