The question I often get is: is gasoline dangerous on a boat? Obviously it is a fuel with a high explosive potential, so I can't say it's like water. In this sense, diesel has much less explosive capacity, in fact to make the engine work, this fuel must be compressed a lot to explode, which is achieved with a spark with gasoline. So yes, gasoline has a higher rate of danger than diesel. However, I want to make you think in other terms. On the road, in the event of a rear-end collision, it is better to be on a bicycle or a truck, all other things being equal such as speed, rear-end car, etc. Here too, a truck is safer, but that doesn't mean I don't use a bicycle if I can and want to. All this to tell you that you always have to put everything into context. For recreational boating, that is, I'm mainly talking about boats or dinghies under 20 meters, the main causes of explosions caused by a fuel detonation have as their main cause, poor maintenance. In fact, engines that use gasoline to function, which are usually 4-stroke, now all have closed injection systems, so fuel leakage only occurs due to failures or problems that compromise correct operation. In this case they become very dangerous. Diesel engines that use diesel are less dangerous, but there are no engines or boats with zero risks. In fact, the Yachts that make so much news in the summer, perhaps because they caught fire, are never, or almost never, powered by gasoline engines but diesel. Electrical systems are often the cause of the problem. So from a safety perspective, I recommend that you do the correct maintenance, periodically, even if you don't use the boat regardless of the type of engine you have installed. Another aspect is the cost per mile or cost related to consumption. If we went back to 2020 I could say that diesel costs about 30% less than gasoline, so for the same consumption, you would have an economic difference. Since 2022, things are completely different and as never happened historically, for the same consumption, the petrol engine, with a lower cost than diesel, is more convenient. This is mainly due to 2 factors: 1. land and sea transport, which uses diesel, has been the driving factor for the post-pandemic restart, causing the demand for diesel to soar 2. heating that increases demand and the crisis of the war in Ukraine that decreases supply https://quifinanza.it/economia/video/... Another thing is consumption per mile or hour. As a rule, as with cars, if I want performance I will go for petrol engines, if I want autonomy I will go for diesel engines. Don't forget to enter the context of what we are talking about: that is, boats, free time, passions, fun. There is also an article on this from years ago on Barche Mania which I'll link to: https://www.barchemania.com/quanto-co... You can't help but consider that boats have an average engine usage of less than 50 hours per year. So try to choose the boat you like, with the engine you would like based on the desired performance for what you're going to do and then enjoy it and have fun. • Is gasoline dangerous on a boat?
