Report from December 6, 2018 A hallucinogenic drink prepared in the Amazon is causing a global craze. But ayahuasca is not without risk. In Peru, its consumption is legal and at the heart of a flourishing trade and locals improvise as shamans to take advantage of the windfall. But tourists have died during ayahuasca ceremonies, including a Canadian woman. Enquête looked into its presence, illegal in Canada, and discovered that ayahuasca is consumed clandestinely by followers who use it in a spiritual approach. Some discreetly promote shamanic ayahuasca ceremonies on Facebook. However, three religious groups in Canada can legally import this powerful hallucinogen. Health Canada has granted them an exemption on the basis of religious freedom. Also, doctors are interested in it and see therapeutic potential.
