In his youth, he dreamed of a scientific career as a philosopher. In 1918, he was personally promoted on the battlefield by Commander Józef Piłsudski. In 1939, the 10th Cavalry Brigade under his command effectively protected the "Kraków" Army from the Germans. In the towns liberated under his command in France and Belgium, and especially in Breda in the Netherlands, his memory is still alive today. Stanisław Maczek - the only Polish general who did not lose a single battle during World War II - is an extraordinary figure, but still little known in Poland. Rafał Geremek's documentary is an attempt to organize the most important events and curiosities from the life of the commander of the 1st Armored Division. The director, following Maczek's footsteps in present-day Ukraine, France, Scotland and the Netherlands, took on the considerable challenge of transferring to the screen 102 years of the life of the hero of five nations. The memories of the general's family and the last living of his subordinates were skillfully supplemented with photographs and film accounts from European archives. The film also shows the drama of the soldiers of the Polish Armed Forces in the West - people fighting for the freedom of Poland for six years and often unable to return to their homeland after the end of this fight. Such was the fate of General Maczek himself, who settled in Edinburgh after the war and worked, among other things, as a bartender. The whole, interspersed with feature scenes featuring actor Redbad Klynstra-Komarnicki in the role of General Maczek, not only provides a broad perspective on the military achievements of the 1st Armoured Division, but also allows us to get to know its commander as a righteous, very reasonable, and at the same time extraordinarily cheerful and modest man. 60 MIN., POLAND 2019, PROD.
