Students in CM1, CM2 and 6th grade (cycle 3) will be able to discover what is happening in the bowels of the Earth. First of all, the Earth is made up of nested envelopes: the continental or oceanic crust, the upper mantle, the lower mantle, the outer core and the inner core. The deeper we go, the hotter it gets. The crust and the upper mantle are separated into tectonic plates that move. As they move, they create cracks where the magma enters. Then, it stays in the magma chamber, then goes through the chimney and exits through the volcanic cone. As it comes out, the magma becomes lava which cools, accumulates and enlarges the volcano. The movement of the plates also creates earthquakes or earthquakes. It is also these movements that are at the origin of mountain ranges. The plates can collide and the densest plate passes under the less dense plate. The plates also move away and form an ocean. Things are happening inside the Earth!
