Great motor activity, with greater control of movements. Can brush teeth, comb hair and get dressed with little help. Intellectual Development Has already acquired a large vocabulary, consisting of 1500 to 2000 words; shows great interest in language, talking incessantly. Understands orders with negative sentences, articulates consonants and vowels well and builds well-structured sentences. Understands the differences between fantasy and reality. Understands concepts of number and space: “more”, “less”, “bigger”, “inside”, “under”, “behind”. Begins to recognise patterns between objects: round objects, soft objects, animals, etc. Social Development Enjoys playing with other children; when in a group, may be selective about their playmates. Likes to imitate adults’ activities. Is learning to share, accept rules and respect others’ turns. Emotional Development Nightmares are common at this stage. Has imaginary friends and a great capacity for fantasy. Often tries to test the power and limits of others. Displays many challenging and oppositional behaviours. Their emotional states reach extremes: e.g. is defiant and then quite embarrassed. Has increasing confidence in themselves and the world. Moral Development Has a greater awareness of right and wrong, generally concerned with doing the right thing; may blame others for their mistakes (difficulty taking responsibility for their behaviour).
