In order to avoid critical breakdowns and engine malfunctions, it is recommended, of course unofficially, to change the standard chain tensioner to a mechanical one, it is also called automatic. Its operating principle is very simple. This is an ordinary spring that pushes out the rod and a ratchet mechanism that fixes it. How long a new Niva lasts on a standard hydraulic tensioner is not clear, but a mechanical one, be it ISAI, Topol 2M, or Pilot, will work flawlessly for the entire service life of the engine.
