We gained exclusive access to the world’s largest and toughest prison in El Salvador. Fifteen thousand prisoners are incarcerated here, most of whom will never come out alive. The prison is the symbol of a ruthless crackdown on gangs by El Salvador’s 42-year-old president, Nayib Bukele. With more than 3,000 homicides per year for a population of six million, El Salvador has long held the record of being the most dangerous country in the world. This insecurity was caused by the gang war between MS13 and Barrio 18. To combat this violence, El Salvador’s young president, Nayib Bukele, declared a ruthless war on the gangs. More than 75,000 people accused of being members of MS13 and Barrio 18 have been arrested and imprisoned. An extraordinary penitentiary was built especially for them: the CECOT (Center for the Confinement of Terrorism). It is the largest prison in the world. In El Salvador, the policy of repression is bearing fruit. Neighborhoods once controlled by killers are now quiet. But as Amnesty International has documented, the repression has also resulted in systematic human rights abuses. The police are under pressure to meet arrest quotas, innocent people have been arrested, but these “mistakes” do not hinder President Bukele’s security policy. This clip comes from a documentary that was produced by Pallas TV and was directed by Marin Fossati and Mario Pécot, premiering for the first time in 2024. --- ➡ DOCUMENTARY INDEX: 00:00 Arrival at the CECOT prison 01:54 We enter the CECOT prison 04:12 What is the punishment cell like? 04:53 How do they protect themselves against a possible rebellion? 06:37 What is daily life like in the CECOT prison? 08:05 We interview one of the prisoners 09:29 What do the prisoners say that they don't let us interview? 10:25 Why do they destroy the graves of gang members? --- Historias Vivas is the home of the most incredible documentaries from around the world.
