Mayflies, stick insects, dragonflies, beetles, butterflies, but also bugs and lice: insects are the most species-rich class in the animal world. They pollinate plants, ensuring their continued existence, but also our survival. Insects are food for many other animals. They also recycle dead material and thus provide nature with vital services. Insects keep the cycle of life going. 75% fewer flying insects in Germany than thirty years ago - this finding shocked the population, politics and science in 2017. Where have they gone? Volunteer entomologists had collected data in nature reserves, i.e. where insects should actually be doing well. In this respect, the finding was dramatic and worrying, and the term "insect extinction" was apparently not an exaggeration. The new documentary by MDR WISSEN "How are our insects doing?" takes a closer look at the life and death of insects. Which insects are affected and which are not? What can we say with certainty about them, where is there a need for research? The film introduces people who are connected to and fascinated by the insects, who are worried about their disappearance, who create habitats for them and research them.
