In this video I speak with Dr. Catharina Latz, head of corneal surgery at the Dardenne Eye Clinic https://www.augenklinik-dardenne.de/ What is the cornea? The transparent cornea (from the Greek: keras) is the slightly curved front of the eyeball. It is almost round and has a diameter of around 11 mm. The cornea is responsible for around 75 percent of the refractive power of the human eye (the lens of the eye around 25 percent). Without this refraction of light, we would not be able to see clearly. It is constantly moistened with tear fluid, which supplies it and enables smooth blinking. How can you recognize a corneal injury? The triad of (1) spasmodic eyelid closure, (2) reflexive tear flow, and (3) pain always suggests a corneal injury. There are basically four different possibilities for corneal diseases: 1. Degeneration (malformation) due to heredity 2. Permanent damage due to irreversible damage (dystrophies) 3. Inflammation of the cornea (e.g. due to old contact lenses) 4. Injuries due to foreign bodies (e.g. due to splinters when sawing) Temporary diseases (inflammations) caused by infections can also occur. The causes are bacteria, viruses or fungi. The most common injuries to the cornea are caused by external influences. The inner layers have only a very limited or no ability to regenerate. As a result, injuries usually lead to scarring in the affected region. The cornea is not supplied with blood The cornea does not have any blood vessels, which would be out of place for purely optical reasons. Like all body tissue, the cornea is dependent on a constant and good supply of nutrients and on the complete removal of any metabolic products. Without blood vessels, this is a problem. The cornea of the eye therefore has to obtain the oxygen it needs from the ambient air. It has two suppliers of nutrients: the outer layers of the cornea are supplied with nutrients by the tear fluid, and the inner layers by the aqueous humor of the eye. ▬ About this channel ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ With “Video Visit Dr. Weigl" you have found the current and medical-scientific channel that describes topics related to pain, #medicine and #health in an understandable way but based on facts, guidelines and studies.
