In December 2023, Argentine President Javier Milei took office promising a completely radical fiscal adjustment policy. In his words, everything would get much worse before it started to get better. A year has passed since this announcement, and Argentines now hope that the hardest days of Milei's strong adjustment are behind them. There is one problem: the poverty rate in the country has already surpassed the mark of 50% of the population. Milei's first year in the Casa Rosada was marked by price stabilization. Monthly inflation, which was around 20% in January 2024, fell to 2.7% in October. Economists warn about this point here. Even with the positive data, this does not mean that prices on supermarket shelves or in shopping have actually fallen. In fact, what has happened is that these prices have stopped rising exponentially. It is true that Argentina has returned to having monthly inflation in the single digits, but the year-on-year rate is still one of the highest in the world.
