Indicators simply explained - term, properties, functionality & examples - inorganic chemistry. Indicators can be used to determine whether a solution is an acid or a base. Indicators include tools that display certain information. A pH indicator is used for this. The pH value can be determined from the color. The indicator reacts with the acid or base. Most indicators consist of aromatic systems with large delocalized pi electron systems. This is why different pH colors arise thanks to the splitting off of the protons and the change in size and the associated absorption of light.
