That's right, with the INDEX formulas and MATCH we will be able to do what the VLOOKUP function cannot! First, let's see how to build and use the INDEX formula. This formula is used to return the value that is in position x from a list. In the example, we have a list with several codes. When using the INDEX formula with this list (B3:B7) and entering a position number (3), the formula returns the code that is in the entered position of this list (AB0003). The INDEX function is often used to work with Excel buttons, and it is also very useful when combined with the MATCH function. With this formula, we can find an employee's code just by entering the list where he is and his position in the list. Now we need to learn the MATCH formula. The function of this formula is to find the position of a value in a list. In other words, I need to pass it a value that I want to search for, a column (or row) where this value is and also whether I want to search for exactly this value or approximations of it. In practice, the formula searches for a certain value in a list and returns the position in that list where the value is. For example, I can search for an employee (Renato) in the list of names (C3:C7) and tell the formula that I want to search for Renato (0). The formula will return Renato's position in the list of names (3). Now that I have used the INDEX MATCH formulas separately, I can combine the two to first find the person's position in the list (Renato's position in the list is 3rd). Then, I can inform this position (3rd) and the list (B3:B7) to the INDEX formula and it will return the value that is in that position (3rd) in that list (B3:B7), in this case it is the code AB0003.
