Jangbongdo (長峯島) An island in Jangbong-ri, Bukdo-myeon, Ongjin-gun, Incheon Metropolitan City. It is located at 126°20′E, 37°33′N, 22.6㎞ northwest of Incheon. Sido (矢島) is 10.3㎞ to the east. It has an area of 7.15㎢, and a coastline of 22.5㎞. It is said that Jangbongdo was named because the island is long and has many peaks. The island forms a low hilly mountain range (maximum height 150m). It stretches from the northwest to the southeast. The lowlands in the center are used as rice fields. The coast is relatively monotonous, and most of it is a sandy coast. The surrounding water depth is less than 10m. The average temperature in January is -2.1℃, the average temperature in August is 25.2℃, and the annual precipitation is 1,234㎜. Current Status In the late Goryeo Dynasty, Ganghwa Island residents began to live here as refugees to avoid the Mongol army. As of 2010, the population was 989 (514 males, 475 females), and the number of households was 420. The settlements are densely located in the central lowlands, and are also scattered in the eastern and northwestern hilly areas. The land use status is 0.57㎢ for rice paddies, 0.56㎢ for dry fields, and 5.47㎢ for forests. The residents mainly engage in agriculture. Agricultural products include rice, barley, beans, potatoes, and garlic, and grapes with high sugar content are a specialty. In the coastal waters, seaweed, lilies, crabs, shrimp, and clams are caught in large quantities. Yongam Beach and Handeul Beach in the south are famous places surrounded by pine trees like a folding screen. For transportation, regular passenger ships operate from Sammok Port on Yeongjong Island. As for educational institutions, there is the Jangbong Branch School of Incheon Sammok Elementary School.
