It is written in the 13th century. The Kingdom of Bohemia and the Margraviate of Moravia are ruled by Přemysl Otakar II. The king sends his representative in northern Bohemia, the administrator of the royal castle of Bezděz, Oldřich of Chlum (Karel Roden), to the engagements, which are supposed to reconcile the feuding families of the lords of Dubá and Vartemberk. On the way to the castle, Oldřich and his assistants (Jan Dolanský, David Matásek) find traces of the robbery and murder of an unknown buyer. On the Vartemberk estate, Oldřich meets Ludmila (Klára Issová), the daughter of Markvart from Vartemberk, whom he has known since childhood. Ludmila confides in him that she does not want to marry Beneš from Dubé (David Prachař), even though their wedding is a condition for the fragile peace between the two families. During a festive feast, organized in Oldřich's honor, the burgrave (Miloš Vávra) is murdered. Suspicion falls on the lutenist (Saša Rashilov), whose fiancee the burgrave tried to abuse. On the morning of the second day, Markvart (Martin Štěpánek), the head of the Vartemberk family, is found dead under the windows of the castle. Suicide is out of the question! Oldřich embarks on an investigation. Despite the death of the lord of the castle, a knight tournament is held, in which Beneš of Dubé wins. Everyone can see that instead of his future Ludmila, he devotes himself to Markvart's recent widow, Klara from Vartemberk (Markéta Hrubešová). Meanwhile, Oldřich tries to reconstruct Markvart's murder and cleverly proves that the body of the lord from Vartemberk could only have been thrown from the window of his young wife Klára's chamber. Who is behind the strange murders and what is the connection between them?
