It was a historic event for the canton of Graubünden but also for the whole of Switzerland: the inmates of the Sennhof prison in Chur were transferred to the new Cazis Tignez correctional facility. After 202 years, the gates of the Sennhof correctional facility on the edge of the old town in Chur closed forever. The history of the Sennhof is eventful and shows how much the penal system has changed in the last 200 years. In the Sennhof, convicts were still kept in chains. Today, prison officials agree: the worst punishment is deprivation of liberty in and of itself. But the reputation that the Sennhof is the toughest prison in Switzerland has persisted until the end. The film shows how the prison director, Ines E. Follador-Breitenmoser, and her staff are preparing for the move. The Sennhof may be completely outdated and no longer up to date, but saying goodbye is not easy. The director led a small, well-coordinated team there. The atmosphere among the prison officers was familial, she says. The move to Cazis Tignez, currently the most modern prison in Switzerland, also means reorganization: in the future, 152 inmates will serve their sentences there, and a total of 130 prison officers will work there. DOK author Gieri Venzin accompanied the move preparations, the move itself and the settling in at the new prison over two years. He was interested in how the staff experienced the move and whether the new prison could promote and improve the resocialization of offenders. Daniel Solenthaler, who has worked at the Sennhof for almost 20 years, is very much looking forward to the move to Cazis Tignez. He will be in charge of the newly created elderly department. He says he is excited by the challenge of enabling elderly inmates, some of whom are serving life sentences, to live a dignified life behind bars. Inmates of the new prison also have their say. How did they experience the change? What do they think of the new prison? Their statements clearly illustrate what the deprivation of freedom really means and what it means to be locked up for years.
