“Interest is high and need is great!” More than 50 participants in the conference for hunting rights holders, hunting associations, municipalities, church communities and private hunting owners listened to the presentations with fascination and were very interested in the explanations during the excursion. Since the massive drought damage and calamities, more and more forest owners and members of hunting associations are asking how they can achieve reforestation of their land and prevent economic and ecological ruin. Hunting is a key factor, because excessive game populations prevent the urgently needed natural regeneration in many areas, thereby causing immense costs and massively reducing biodiversity. Against this background, the conference “What to do with my hunting rights?” in Wipperfürth Agathaberg struck a chord with forest owners. The unexpectedly high number of participants shows that interest is high and need is great. In seven specialist lectures and an excursion to the Wingenbach self-directed hunt, it became clear what high demands forest owners are faced with, what a decisive role game densities play and how hunting must also change if hunters want to continue to live up to their responsibility for nature and society in the future.
