The route these elements take from the earth to your smartphone is ugly. Mining is responsible for air and water pollution and destroys entire areas of land. Dangerous chemicals such as cyanide, sulfuric acid and chlorine are used to extract the mineral resources, threatening biodiversity and harming workers and residents. Mineral resources are also political tools: if countries deny access to them, they can exercise power.
