The Ikarus off-road vehicle is not a joke gone wrong. Its history dates back to 1986, when the French company Auverland introduced the A3, which was developed primarily for the army, but civilians could also buy it. When Ikarus was looking for a way out in 1999, they bought the license for this off-road vehicle in order to produce it domestically, as the Ikarus A3, and start purchasing it for the Hungarian Army. We will never know what would have happened if the plan had succeeded, because Ikarus went bankrupt before the Hungarian Army had even chosen an off-road vehicle to replace the UAZs. A total of five chassis were made in Mátyásföld, three of which were assembled as prototypes, and all three received license plates. This is the last one, which has the French diesel engine and transmission originally intended for it, an Italian off-road transmission, and Anglo-Saxon rigid axles. And this is indeed the real, Hungarian-made Ikarus SUV.
