I WENT TO CHECK OUT THE FIRST PILLARS OF THE VLT SECTION 2 PARIPE ÁGUAS CLARAS, see The Light Rail Vehicle (VLT) project in Salvador took an important step towards integrating the city. The Institute of Environment and Water Resources (INEMA) authorized, this Tuesday (12), a new license that enables the construction of an additional section that will take the VLT to Comércio, a central area of the capital of Bahia. The authorization was published in the edition of the State Official Gazette (DOE) this Tuesday (12). Previously, the VLT plan included a fork that would continue to the North Access of the subway. With the new authorization, the route will be adjusted, connecting to the subway system in the Águas Claras neighborhood, a change that aims to increase mobility and offer a new transportation option for the population. This adaptation to the project comes after the termination of the contract with the concessionaire Metrogeen Skyrail in August 2023, when the state government considered the company's economic rebalancing proposals inadequate. The new VLT project will have a route of 36.4 kilometers, with 34 stations distributed along three major stretches: from Ilha de São João to Calçada, from Paripe to Águas Claras and from Águas Claras to the Piatã waterfront. The initiative, budgeted at more than R$5 billion, stands out for being more ambitious than the initial plan, which would have 25 stations on two lines: the yellow line, from Ilha de São João to Acesso Norte, and the green line, from Feira de São Joaquim to Comércio. With the change, the idea is to create an integrated and efficient urban mobility network for Salvador. Since the authorization to start construction in June 2024, 40 trains and electric equipment have already been ordered. Initial testing of the system is expected to begin in 2026, with the VLT connecting populated and peripheral areas, such as the Subúrbio Ferroviário, directly to the city center and waterfront.
