Gustav The Doll from the Austrian Asylum In the “Cursed Dolls” section of the Museum of the Impossible (where we also find Abigail - the Salem doll), there is Gustav, a doll that comes from the Pest asylum and dates back to the 1950s. It was made by a patient himself with the scraps of his clothes or rather his gown and curtains, and stuffing it with that of his pillow. It takes its name from the patient Gustav 056 (as written in the register of inmates) who began to develop a morbid attachment to the doll, to the point that he spoke to it every day saying that it was alive. He underwent a lobotomy that did not go well and died. When the asylum closed, the doll ended up in the hands of a nephew of a janitor of the facility who took it. The child wanted to get rid of the doll because it gave him nightmares and strange things were happening at home.
