From a bird's eye view, the player takes on the role of a character who wakes up in a randomly generated wilderness at the start of the game. The aim of the game is to survive for as long as possible by maintaining satiety, mental health, and life energy. To this end, similar to Minecraft, resources can be mined, food collected and grown, items manufactured and enemies fought. The player is affected by a lack of food, darkness and various enemies. If the player dies and has not previously activated a respawn point (so-called touchstone), the game is over - Don't Starve uses so-called permadeath, where saving is only possible when leaving the game and a player who has died once remains dead.
