Dona Contcha is a Spanish woman who has lived in Brazil for almost 60 years. She came to the country after marrying Seu Manolo, also Spanish, who came here in search of a better life in the 1950s. Dona Contcha and Seu Manolo met when they were still very young, in Spain, in 1959. They were both 16 years old and the one who took the first step towards this romance was Manolo, who had already been interested in his future wife from afar! Dona Contcha was difficult, as she herself says, and did not give in easily to her suitor's advances. But little by little she accepted to date him. At that time, dating meant walking hand in hand, and even then, they fell madly in love. A few months after they started dating, Manolo told Contcha that he would need to come to Brazil to work. He even tried to convince her to marry him and come with him, but she didn't want to because she was too young for that. The relationship had to end there. Dona Contcha imagined that her partner would forget her when he arrived in Brazil, but that wasn't the case. A few months after his departure, she received a letter from Manolo saying that he loved her. From then on, the two began to exchange letters regularly (the time between one reply and the next was up to a month, since this was the only means of communication at the time). Four years had passed since they separated and they exchanged written declarations of love, until Manolo said, in a letter, that he wanted to bring her to Brazil, get married and build a family on this side of the world. Contcha once again said that she would not board a ship single and that not even her parents would let her travel that way. That was when Manolo decided to send another letter, but to his father-in-law, not to his girlfriend. In this letter, he asked for her hand and explained his intentions. Contcha's parents knew Manolo and accepted the proposal. But there was a problem: how would they marry their daughter to someone from the other side of the ocean? The idea was for the young man to send the documents by mail and for Contcha's father to go to church, make the vows to the priest and sign the marriage papers for him. All with the approval of the bishopric of A Coruña, a province in Spain. And so, at the age of 20, Contcha and Manolo were married by letter. After the wedding, she boarded the ship, no longer a single girl, and came to Brazil to live 59 uninterrupted years with her love, until her husband's departure two years ago. From this unusual marriage, Contcha and Manolo had six children, five of whom are still alive, and many grandchildren. Contcha only returned to Spain in 2001, 40 years after leaving. And despite her strong accent and her distinctive Portunhol, her home is now Brazil. It was here that she raised her family alongside the love of her life.
