※ This video is part of the January 15, 2024 broadcast of "Humans and the Sea - Catch the Sailfish, Fishermen of Lipe Island." Lipe Island, the hidden treasure of Thailand! The fishermen's traditional trap fishing and sailfish catching Tarutao National Park, located at the southernmost tip of Thailand. In this park, designated by the Royal Forest Department in 1974, there is a place called the hidden gem of the Andaman Sea. It is Koh Lipe. This island, bordering Malaysia, is called the "Maldives of Thailand." It is a popular vacation spot and a diving and snorkeling spot where 25% of the world's tropical fish species are found. Meanwhile, the fishing village of the Urak Lawoi tribe, an old settler, has settled here. The first indigenous people of Lipe Island, the Urak Lawoi, are a combination of the words "urak" meaning people and "lawoi" meaning sea, and they are a tribe of the Chao Ley, a sea gypsy tribe from Malaysia. They have lived in the Andaman Sea in southern Thailand until now. Among them, Lipe Island is where the Urak Lawoi have formed several communities and most of them still make a living by catching fish. In particular, communal fishing, where traditional traps called "fish traps" are installed by community units, is actively practiced. A large trap is placed 20-30 meters deep in the sea at a point near Lipe Island and pulled out after 20 days. People come from as far away as Bangkok to buy fish here. There are about 10 communal fishing and trap teams in the village, and Atti, the leader of one of them, operates 8 traps with 7 team members. In addition, the fishermen of the village still go out to sea on long-tail boats called Hang Yao to catch and sell big fish. However, since the recent opening of Tarutao National Park, their lives have changed a lot. Many of the fishermen here now operate fishing boats for tourists and catch fish. Mr. Atty, a famous fisherman, is one of them. He usually goes out to catch sailfish when he receives an order from a restaurant on Koh Lipe Walking Street, the main street of Lipe Island. Sailfish dishes are popular with tourists. That is why Mr. Atty goes out to sea to catch sailfish in between his trap fishing. He is working hard to save money by catching fish in order to buy a boat as a gift for his eldest son, Asya, who will soon become an adult. Mr. Atty is proud and thankful that his eldest son, who does not go to the city like other young people, is protecting the island and continuing his fisherman career. Will his sailfish catch be successful? Meet the story of the Urak Rawai fishermen of Lipe Island, who chase sailfish on the rough sea. ✔ Program name: Human and the sea - Catch the sailfish, the fishermen of Lipe Island ✔ Broadcast date: 2024.01.15 #Sea #Fisherman #Seafood 00:00:00 How to make and install a fish trap 00:08:07 Leader Atti and 7 team members who operate 8 fish traps 00:21:13 Catching a giant sailfish begins after receiving a restaurant order
