This mega work that I am showing you is the Terzo Valico dei Giovi, whose precise name is “Progetto Unico Terzo Valico dei Giovi – Nodo di Genova”. We are talking about a high-speed railway line, still under construction, that crosses about 30 km of the northern Apennines, connecting Genoa to Tortona, and therefore to the existing routes towards Northern Europe. Among these tunnels is the Tunnel di Valico which with its 27 km will be the longest tunnel in Italy for high speed! Thanks to this work, the Genoa-Milan route will be done in about 1 hour instead of 1 hour and 30 and will improve the speed of trade by rail between the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. To reach Rotterdam, for example, goods will take about 4-5 days (by train) instead of 9 (by ship). Furthermore, CO2 emissions can be reduced by 55% compared to current road transport. In this video I explain how they are building the Terzo Valico, what this tunnel is for and when it will be finished. I will also explain the hammer method and an exclusive 3D animation of how a mechanical mole works. 00:00 The longest high-speed tunnel in Italy 00:27 What is the Terzo Valico dei Giovi and where is it located 01:15 The unique Terzo Valico dei Giovi - Genoa Node project 01:47 The geological context 02:14 How are tunnels excavated? 03:00 The hammer excavation method 03:08 Phase 1.
