HOW TO CHANGE GEARS In this video I teach you how to change gears One of the first things you need to learn to do when you drive a car is changing gears. We obviously need to have learned how to start, and therefore how to use the clutch. But before even lifting the clutch to get the car moving, you will have had to engage first gear, which is the one you normally use to start off and which you will always have to remember to engage once you have stopped the vehicle, in order to be able to set off again... without any nasty surprises. But how do you engage first? And then second? And then third? Now I will explain the various steps one by one, but watch the video to the end because that is where I will show you all the consecutive steps from first to fifth gear and vice versa and I will give you some useful advice especially related to the driving test. In the middle of all the gears, there is the one we call neutral, the neutral gear, the one that even if the engine is on and we accelerate, will not move the car even a millimeter. To engage first, you need to move the lever to the left, that is, towards our leg, until it reaches the stop, and then move forward. To shift to second, you just need to keep the lever pointed to the left and, calmly, move it back all the way. Shifting from second to third gear is very simple. Just push the gear lever forward with the palm of your hand, without having to move it to the right. By doing this, the gear lever will automatically move into neutral. From here, just push the gear lever forward again, again with the palm of your hand, to engage third gear. Shifting from third to fourth gear is by far the simplest; just move the gear lever backwards, going straight and using your fingers, passing through neutral and then engaging fourth gear. Shifting from fourth to fifth gear is perhaps the most challenging, also because it is done so few times and therefore there are fewer opportunities to try it. What you need to do is this: push the gear lever into neutral by moving it a little forward, then move to the right, until it stops and, still pushing to the right, move forward. You may have noticed that to change all gears indiscriminately, I keep my hand over the gear lever, with my palm and fingers wrapping around the knob. This is certainly the safest grip to avoid the risk of your hand slipping off the knob when you move it. If you want, to engage first and second, since you will have to push the gear lever to the left, you can also keep your hand on the side of the knob, like this. It would be too easy if you only had to move the gear lever to change gears. First of all, you have to do some preparation work with the pedals. If you are accelerating, you have to prepare to engage a higher gear, and you will have to do this by completely releasing the accelerator pedal and simultaneously lowering the clutch pedal, all the way down and quite quickly. If you are slowing down, you will have to prepare to engage a lower gear. So, keeping your foot light on the brake, so that the vehicle continues to slow down even when downshifting, fully lower the clutch and engage the appropriate gear; then, still keeping your right foot on the brake, light, start to lift the clutch until the engine brake starts to intervene. After stopping the clutch halfway for a moment, you can release it completely. If you can, always change one gear at a time, without skipping them. Lastly, remember that the gearbox does not accept diagonal movement. This means that, for example, if you try to engage first gear from neutral with what I call a shortcut, or rather the diagonal movement, you will likely have the gear lever getting stuck between first and third, and then, most likely, engaging the latter and not first gear. So the movements must be lateral or back and forth. This is where the video on gear changes ends. I hope I have cleared up some doubts for you, and that I have made you understand at least a little about how the gear lever works.
