After the Americans crossed the German border on September 12th, they advanced to Schevenhütte with infantry and tanks in just a few days. However, during a rapid advance to the Rhine they feared a German flank attack from the forested area of the Eifel, which they found eerie. They tried to forestall this by attacking the mountain region, without being aware of the conditions in this impassable terrain. This developed into a bitter battle at the end of 1944. Although nature has now almost covered up the old war wounds, we were still able to find some on our hike. What remains are the memorials to death, crosses that still remind us of the fate of individuals, but also of all those who have found their final resting place together with their nameless comrades in the Vossenack military cemetery.
