He said: “I heard Ibn Abbas say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to fast, and we would say that he would not even open his mouth. His mouth would be open, and we would say that he would not even fast.”” Although Uthman ibn Hakim asked Sa’id ibn Jubair about the fasting of Rajab, he answered about the regular habits of our Prophet. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would sometimes fast for a long time, until people thought that he would not open his mouth. Sometimes, because his mouth was open for a long time, people would think that he would not fast anymore. This would also happen in the month of Rajab. Mujibah al-Bahiliyyah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from his father or uncle that he said: “He (his father or uncle) went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and then came back a year later with a changed appearance and condition. He said: “O Messenger of Allah, do you not recognize me?” He said: “What has changed you? You used to be beautiful?” He said: “I have eaten only at night since I left you.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Why have you tormented yourself?” He said, then: “Fast the month of patience and one day in every month.” He said, “Add a little, I have the strength.” He said, “Fast two days.” He said, “Add a little.” He said, “Fast three days.” He said, “Add a little.” He said, “Fast in the sacred months and then leave them, fast in the sacred months and then leave them, fast in the sacred months and then leave them,” and he held up three fingers and said, “Fast in the sacred months and then leave them.” Narrated by Abu Dawud, Ahmad, and An-Nasaa’i. The benefits of this hadith are: 1. That fasting throughout the year is not in accordance with the Shariah and is punishing oneself. 2. A person who intends to fast an optional fast should fast one day, two or three days in months other than Ramadan. 3. If he considers this amount too little and fasts three days in the sacred months, it is better. The reason why this hadith is mentioned in this chapter is because the month of Rajab is also one of the sacred months. Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran: “Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve months on the day He created the heavens and the earth. Four of them are sacred (months). That is the right religion. Do not wrong yourselves in them.” The sacred months are the months that are honorable, exalted, and in which fighting, conflict, and hostility are forbidden. These four sacred months are the months of Muharram, Dhul-Qa’dah, Dhul-Hijjah, and Rajab. Therefore, observing voluntary fasts in the month of Rajab is considered meritorious. It is clear that those who can find a way out should observe voluntary fasts in this month. Sheikh Muhammad Sadiq Muhammad Yusuf, may Allah have mercy on him.
