They deny it, create new identities or flee to South America. Secret Nazi networks help them to escape justice. Clergy in the Vatican and the US secret service also provide support when they go into hiding. In the Federal Republic of Germany, Himmler's daughter Gudrun organizes financial help for her father's accomplices. At the same time, right-wing radicals in many countries glorify the history of the SS. Klaus Barbie, the "Butcher of Lyon", is said to have said when he began his service as a Gestapo officer, "I have come to kill." He tortures his victims personally. When the war is over and the Allies start looking for the perpetrators, Barbie initially goes into hiding. Although he was sentenced to death in absentia by France, Barbie worked for several years as a secret agent for the USA. In 1951, the secret service helped him travel to Bolivia via the so-called "rat line". There, Barbie adopted a new identity. It was not until decades later that the Nazi criminal was extradited to France and brought to trial.
