Bratislava, December 21 (Teraz.sk) – Voters twice confirmed the results of the parliamentary elections of September 2023 during the first half of 2024, in the presidential and European elections. This was stated by publicist Juraj Hrabko on TASR TV when assessing the political events of the first half of 2024. According to him, part of society understood the spring presidential elections as a possibility of symbolic "revenge" for the results of the parliamentary elections, with which they did not identify. "That is why the slogan was that they cannot have everything. But the retaliation failed and this part of society was also defeated in the presidential elections," stated Hrabko. However, the high polarization of society contributed to an exceptionally high voter turnout. Hrabko recalled that the number of votes allocated to Ivan Korčok in the second round of elections would have been enough for him to win in the previous election period. However, thanks to higher voter turnout, his opponent, Peter Pellegrini, became the winner of the 2024 presidential election. The 2024 European elections also had an exceptionally high voter turnout by Slovak standards. Although Progressive Slovakia emerged as the most successful party in the June European elections, according to Hrabko, the overall view of the votes allocated to political parties again shows a similar pattern to that in the presidential elections. "This can be considered an echo of previous elections, both parliamentary and presidential. And it was again reflected in the results. These too were more in favor of the government coalition than non-governmental parties," he recalled. He added that in a democratic society, nothing is ever definitive, there will always be new elections in which voters always decide again about the distribution of their support. "The elections, whether presidential or parliamentary, were in accordance with the law, they were fair, democratic and no one questioned them. This is simply the kind of society we are," Hrabko stated. Regarding Ivan Korčok's decision to continue in party politics under the colors of Progressive Slovakia, Hrabko said that he was a very good diplomat, but so far he seems to be only an average politician. "But it was his decision to leave diplomacy and enter Slovak politics," he added. Hrabko called the attempted assassination of Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) an event that will have a long-term impact on Slovak politics. "Until it happens to you, you simply don't know what he had to go through, what he had to think about and consider, and what plans he came out of the hospital with," Hrabko stated. Despite the personal trauma, according to Hrabko, the Prime Minister should not focus on revenge, but on helping the country and striving to achieve a better life for the people of Slovakia.
